the Sigma DP1.

Amazingly times on the heels of all the back and forth about megapixels and sensor size in my Tuesday diary, a NY Times article about a compact camera with an APS-C-sized sensor.

As I also opined today on Facebook, I think that some of the negatives the author mentions, like lack of zoom and lack of "scene modes", are actually positives for folks like me, who I'm assuming are the target demo for this thing.

I had a 13-hour day at work today, which I think is a new record for me.  Some folks I know regularly work hours like that, so I can't be that unhappy.  However, it does mean that my apartment will not be as clean as I wanted it to be when my folks arrive on Saturday.

Can anybody think of a logical reason why crappy tropical storm weather might have caused two separate lunch groups at the office today to get beignets?  In the case of me and my officemate, it was mainly because my delay in being ready for lunch (we didn't leave until 1:30) meant that he was hungry enough to want to go to this one buffet place which is next to a beignet place.  But the other folks?  Maybe rain makes us depressed enough to think that shoving wads of flour soaked in fat and covered in sugar down our throats is a good idea.  I mainly wanted the cafe au lait, which was terrible, so I was disappointed.  Crescent City 4 life!

I was with you right up to the point where he wrote that it was slow to focus, slow to boot, even slow to write shots to memory.

The second best thing about my D60 (after the lens) is that the frickin' thing focuses in an eyeblink and can shoot 2-3 frames per second for at least a couple of seconds (then you wait for the buffer to flush).

Which reminds me - I keep hearing that expensive memory cards are faster than cheap ones. I'll have to try that.

Not really fair comparison by LinDze (2.00 / 0) #4 Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 08:53:00 PM EST
Nikons have always been known for super fast and accurate auto focus. Ont the memory cars check an independent review for actual speeds. Even among the fancy 144x type cards there are big differences in actual throughput between vendors and models.

Yes, that is definately a turn off by riceowlguy (2.00 / 0) #6 Sat Jul 26, 2008 at 02:09:01 AM EST
but it seems that all compact digital cameras have that problem.  So, if the choice is between a slow compact digital camera that takes bad pictures and a slow compact digital camera that takes good pictures, I know which one I'm voting for.

It'll never replace my 5D (or whatever replaces it) for serious shooting, but as an everyday carry-around it might be worth it.

How's that ScanGauge doing? My truck is old enough that I'm starting to get mildly interested in hacking it.

It definately encourages me by riceowlguy (2.00 / 0) #5 Sat Jul 26, 2008 at 02:06:35 AM EST
to drive a certain way.  Slow.

It has confirmed that my engine completely shuts off the fuel flow when coasting; that if I'm not trying to accelerate, then sixth gear is always the right one to be in.  I've yet to take a highway trip long enough for it to be useful in calculating just how much worse 70mph is than 55 for mileage.

Also, having gallons per hour and manifold pressure available as gauges allows me the illusion of flying an airplane, but only a little bit.

Yeah I saw some of the articles about that Sigma, I'm sure one day be ways around some of the issues it but when I heard what they were doing and the size I was thinking there has to be some real drawbacks there and what do you now, there are.
