Featuring dull weekend stuff.

Haven't done much cycling with Small Boy. For some reason, he decided that he wanted to go cycling and wanted his stabilisers (training wheels) off. Fair enough. Took him to a nearby park where there is space for such activities and gave it a go. He got the hang pretty quickly but I noticed that his bike was ridiculously small. Yes, I'd let him grow out of the bike before teaching him to use it.

This morning, went to Halfords - yes I know I should be supporting independent bike shops, but they had a sale on. Was able to get him a much larger bike for not very much money at all. I felt that things like gears would be an unnecessary complication at this stage. I will go to a proper shop and get him a proper bike for the next one.

Anyhow, having the right sized machine made it a lot easeir for him when we went back to the park this afternoon. The only problem is, I have to run to keep up - and I'm not really built for running. He's also a bit nervous when he sees people coming and tends to slam on the anchors rather readily.

Anhow, the whole mission was successful. Next time though I am taking my bike so I don't have to run.

In other Small Boy sports-related news, his cricket club seem to have managed to teach him how to bowl (he bowls left handed, bats right - as my dad does). So I also went to a sports shop yesterday and got him a cheap-but-proper bat and one of the junior cricket balls they use (heavier and harder than a tennis ball, but much kinder than a real cricket ball). We have been practising in the garden but my habitual neglect of the lawn means that the bounce is a little unpredictable.

Generally SB would rather be doing outside, sporty stuff than playing computer games, but he needs to be given the chance. I blame the parents.

In work-related news, not sure if this big enhancement will really be going live Wednesday. The problem is, due to all these people wanting to to UAT/training, we just haven't had time to actually test it properly. The actual logic part works fine - we had enough people in UAT sessions to put a realistic production workload on it - but the supporting crap needs testing well - which, historically, has been a weak area. I have written some test scenarios (another thing that isn't my job) but we've only worked through about half of them.

An early start on Wednesday would've suited me as well so I could slope off to this funeral in the afternoon.

Charlie Brooker can sometimes be entertaining, but this article hit the spot for me. Unsurprisingly. It also has something in it for the Dawkins haters. Anyway, will be setting the Evil Sky+ box for that one.

What percentage chance do you give England of running down that total tomorrow?

I'm going 6% England win, 25% England save the game, 68% Injuns and 1% Freak intervention [Alien invasion or something ...], although I'm secretly hoping KP and Colly are still in come 2:00pm and chase it down.

Until I looked it up... by Metatone (4.00 / 1) #2 Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 03:45:11 PM EST
I thought it was deeply unlikely, but I see on cricinfo that:

The most in a single day of Test cricket is 588, on the second day of the 1936 Old Trafford Test. England, 173 for 2 overnight, declared at 571 for 8, then India reached 190 for 0 by the close. The most by one side in a day is 509 (from 32 for 0 to 541 for 9), by Sri Lanka on the second day of their first Test against Bangladesh in Colombo in 2002.

<spoiler>Thus, it has happened before, which I didn't know, but I still feel that Kumble will make it harder than an Alien Invasion.</spoiler>

The TMS team by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #4 Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 04:24:40 PM EST

were saying that the highest 2nd innings score England had posted to win when batting second was about 340, with most less than 280. The thing is, the second innings chase score is subject to all sorts of natural limits of consequence which make it statistically abnormal, so I'm not sure how much should be read into it.

On the first day of the Edgbaston test in the '05 Ashes, England hit 407 in 80 overs (and over an hour was rained off), so it's certainly possible. Likely? No.

Without wanting to tempt fate, it didn't sound like (Apple) Kumble was doing that much this evening; it sounded more like Sreesanth and Kahn were the danger, although the ball was new so it's hardly surprising at that stage, I guess.

Very slim by Herring (4.00 / 1) #3 Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 04:15:39 PM EST
It works out at over 5 an over. I think. It will be interesting to see them try. Or depressing.

I am going to get my dad to teach SB to bowl left-hand leg-spin. That's the answer.

If England do anything by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #5 Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 04:31:32 PM EST

I reckon it'll be more like the Old Trafford test a couple of years ago; half way through the afternoon it might look dangerous, but (as the Aussies did), they'll end up having to fight a rear-guard action just to get the draw.

Chinamen are rare in the modern game; I've a feeling right-handed might be better (stock ball going away from the right-handers), although beggars can't be choosers. Get him to work.

in time he will grow a beard and then he'll be all set to bowl left arm orthodox spin.

Maths by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #7 Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 04:47:11 PM EST

I haven't found a canonical reference for tomorrow, but the last few days have been scheduled at something like 110-120 overs (36-40 per session), which would makes the run rate somewhere round 3.77-4.04 if it were the same again. Still not great for a test, but better than 5.

India scored at 3.90 by Metatone (2.00 / 0) #8 Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 04:57:28 PM EST
in the first innings, but every subsequent innings has so far seen a drop in scoring rate.

At least he knows how to brake by TurboThy (2.00 / 0) #10 Sun Aug 12, 2007 at 06:19:40 PM EST
When my dad taught me to ride (by letting go of the broomstick without telling me) he'd unfortunately forgot to tell me where the brakes were. I pedalled furiously for some twenty seconds before deciding enough was enough and promptly collided with the fence.

My D2 refused to use brakes even when they were pointed out repeatedly. She felt that running into things was a more reliable way to stop. I spent a lot of time straightening handlebars.

Should read one of his books as well really. Strikes me that maybe I don't like him solely on the basis of his smug little face.
